ABSTRACT

Calcium is the third most crucial nutrient for andean blackberry; however, its absorption is limited in acid soils, and its low mobility in the plant decreases its effects on fruits. Therefore, the effect of foliar fertilizers with calcium on andean blackberry fruits was estimated. In three locations, experiments were established with five calcium sources (Ca chelate, CaB nitrate, Ca oxide, CaB and CaBZn gluconate) and a control without calcium, applied in three phenological stages and recording: weight, diameters, firmness, color, juice, pulp, pH, soluble solids, acidity, dehydration, and damage. Soil and tissue analysis was performed to identify the relationship between the plant's nutritional conditions and its fertilization response. For the statistical analysis were used mixed models, tests of means, and principal components. Foliar fertilization with chelate, nitrate, and calcium oxide in andean blackberry crops with thorns, in production, with pruning management, and in the phenological stages of flower bud, fruit set, and red fruit, is a viable alternative to improve firmness, weight, and diameter of the fruits. In contrast, the chemical and color parameters in andean blackberry fruits depend on the edaphoclimatic conditions of each zone. This fertilization should be considered as a complement in soils without acidity problems and with balanced cationic saturations.


El calcio es el tercer nutriente más importante para la mora; sin embargo, su absorción se ve limitada en suelos ácidos y su baja movilidad en planta disminuye su efecto en frutos. Por tanto, se estimó el efecto de fertilizantes foliares con calcio en frutos de mora. En tres localidades, se establecieron experimentos con cinco recursos de Ca (quelato de Ca, nitrato de CaB, óxido de Ca, KCaB y gluconato de CaBZn) y un control sin calcio, aplicados en tres etapas fenológicas y registrándose: peso, diámetros, firmeza, color, jugo, pulpa, pH, sólidos solubles, acidez, deshidratación y daños. Se realizó análisis de suelo y tejido, para identificar la relación entre las condiciones nutricionales de la planta y su respuesta a la fertilización. Para el análisis estadístico, se utilizaron modelos mixtos, pruebas de medias y componentes principales. La fertilización foliar con quelato, nitrato y óxido de calcio en cultivos de mora andina con espinas, en producción, con manejo de podas y en las etapas fenológicas de botón floral, cuajado y fruto rojo, es una alternativa viable para mejorar la firmeza, peso y diámetro de los frutos. En contraste, los parámetros químicos y de color en frutos de mora andina dependen de las condiciones edafoclimáticas propias de cada zona. Esta fertilización, se debe considerar como complemento en suelos sin problemas de acidez y con saturaciones catiónicas equilibradas.

ABSTRACT

The industrialization of papaya generates a large amount of organic waste, which is rich in antioxidant compounds, especially carotenoids. The purpose of the present article was to study the influence of carotenoid pigments extracted from the papaya epicarp as a partial substitute for nitrites in Frankfurt sausages. Four concentrations of lipid extract of papaya epicarp were analyzed in said sausages. While the control sample had 0 % substitution, 25 %, 50 % and 75 % substitution of nitrite was added to the other samples. The sausages were kept at 6 ± 2 °C for 30 days. The chemical composition, pH, water holding capacity, water activity, emulsion stability, color coordinates, texture profile and sensory appearance were analyzed, and for the sausage that presented the best physicochemical parameters, the stability in the time at 0, 10, 20 and 30 days of storage. It was obtained that adding the papaya epicarp extract to a concentration of 25 % did not affect the physicochemical parameters. In addition, the texture and color characteristics, as well as the sensory evaluation showed the best results for said concentration, guaranteeing stability up to a period of 30 days of storage under vacuum packing conditions and under refrigeration (6 ± 2 °C). A new alternative is proposed to minimize the negative action of nitrites in analyzed Frankfurt sausages, replacing them with antioxidant compounds obtained from a raw material of vegetable origin.


La industrialización de la papaya genera residuos orgánicos, ricos en compuestos antioxidantes, especialmente, en carotenoides. El objetivo de la presente investigación fue estudiar la influencia de los pigmentos carotenoides extraídos de epicarpio de la papaya, como sustituto parcial de los nitritos en salchichas Frankfurt. En dichos embutidos, se analizaron cuatro concentraciones de extracto lipídico de epicarpio de papaya; mientras que la mezcla control tenía 0 % de sustitución, se añadió 25, 50 y 75 % de reemplazo de nitrito a las otras muestras. Las salchichas se mantuvieron a 6 ± 2 °C durante 30 días. Se analizó la composición química, el pH, la capacidad de retención de humedad, la actividad de agua, la estabilidad de la emulsión, las coordenadas de color, el perfil de textura y la apariencia sensorial y para el embutido que presentó los mejores parámetros fisicoquímicos, la estabilidad en el tiempo a 0, 10, 20 y 30 días de almacenamiento. Se obtuvo que la adición del extracto de epicarpio de papaya a una concentración del 25 % no afectó los parámetros fisicoquímicos. Además, las características de textura y color, así como la evaluación sensorial, mostraron los mejores resultados para dicha concentración, garantizando la estabilidad, hasta un periodo de 30 días de almacenamiento, en condiciones de envasado al vacío y en refrigeración (6 ± 2°C). Se propone una nueva alternativa para minimizar la acción negativa de los nitritos en las salchichas Frankfurt, sustituyéndolos por compuestos antioxidantes, obtenidos a partir de una materia prima de origen vegetal.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Hypertension (HTN) is a modifiable risk factor for coronary artery disease, heart failure, cerebrovascular disease and chronic renal failure. HTN affects about 1 billion people globally; by 2025, up to 1.58 billion adults worldwide are likely to suffer from complications of HTN. This study was done to know the diet and physical activity patterns and HTN among the population of three districts of Western Rajasthan. Objectives: To study the dietary and physical activity patterns among the population of Western Rajasthan. and to compare key findings among three districts Pali, Jodhpur and Barmer so that lifestyle changes can be recommended. Methods: A case-control study was done among attendees of NCD clinics of tertiary-level centers in Pali, Barmer and Jodhpur. Hospital Controls were matched to age (± 5 years) and gender Considering the prevalence of HTN to be 20%*, the proportion of exposure in the general population as 0.2, odds ratio to be 2.2, power =80%, alpha=5% sample size is estimated to be 102 cases & 102 controls (from each district). Results: Overall being married (OR= 3.3), having diabetes Cardiac disease (OR= 2.6), excessive salt consumption (OR= 2.7), moderate physical exercise less than 30 minutes (OR=1.9), using oil other than vegetable oil(OR=1.8) , Age >?60 years (OR =1.4) were the key risk factors. It was found that high BMI (BMI>27), consumption of non-vegetable oils (12.7%) was highest in Jodhpur, lack of moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes (81%), lack of sports activity (92%) was highest in Pali, least number of days/week of fruits and vegetables consumption (~1.64 days) was seen in Barmer. Conclusions: Change in quantity of salt consumption and incorporation of moderate physical exercise for >30 minutes was most followed in control of HTN among the attendees of NCD Clinics from the multiple advise given.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have reported that buriti (Mauritia flexuosa L. f.) is a typical fruit from the Brazilian cerrado ecosystem and an important food source for low-income populations. Its composition is rich in carotenoid polyphenols, monounsaturated fatty acids, and ascorbic acid. However, studies on the biological effects resulting from the consumption of this fruit are scarce. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of a diet supplemented with buriti (Mauritia flexuosa L. f.) on kidney and liver functions in growing rats. METHODS: Determination of centesimal composition, carotenoids, and fatty acids content for buriti pulp, standard chow, and butiti-supplemented chow were performed. Then, Wistar rats of both sexes were fed a standard diet or supplemented with buriti pulp. Blood samples were collected at the end of the experiment to determine biochemical parameters. The unpaired t-test was applied, and differences were considered significant when p<0.05. RESULTS: A diet enriched with buriti pulp did not interfere with kidney function and most markers of liver function in animals. Alkaline phosphatase showed significantly higher plasma concentration in female rats, and albumin and uric acid showed lower concentrations in male rats in both experimental groups. CONCLUSION: The changes observed in biochemical markers did not provide evidence of adverse effects of buriti pulp supplementation on liver function. Thus, the intake of buriti pulp can be encouraged as it is a low-cost food source for the general population.

ABSTRACT Objective This study aims to determine the effect of fruit consumption time on blood glucose regulation in pregnant women with gestational diabetes. Methods The study was carried out with 64 volunteer participants diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Participants who were directed to the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics were divided into two groups according to the order of application; Group 1 was included in the nutrition treatment program for a week, consuming fruit for the main meal and Group 2 for the snack. During this process, the participants were applied a personalized nutrition plan that was adjusted equally for macronutrients of all meals containing isocaloric 3 main and 4 snacks. In this process, blood glucose values were measured six times a day by the participants and the blood glucose results of both groups before starting the nutrition therapy and on the seventh day after starting the medical nutrition therapy were compared. Results The mean age of the women participating in the study was 33.50±4.95 years and 32.28±5.18 years for the 1st and 2nd groups, respectively, and the groups were similar in terms of anthropometric measurements. The post-diet average of postprandial blood glucose levels in the morning within each group dropped from 180mg/d to 115mg/dL (p<0,001) for Group 1 and from 185mg/dL to 110mg/dL (p<0,001) for Group 2. There was a decrease in the fasting plasma glucose and postprandial blood glucose levels measured in the morning, noon and evening before and after the medical nutrition therapy of the groups, but no statistically significant difference was found between the groups (p>0.05). All participants on the gestational diabetes diet had normal blood sugar levels without the need for insulin. A statistically significant decrease was observed in the postprandial blood glucose-fasting plasma glucose difference levels of the pregnant women in the group that consumed fruit for snacks (Group 2) on the seventh day of the study (p<0,001). There was no significant difference in the pre-diet and post-diet morning fasting plasma glucose values of both groups (p>0,05). Conclusion This study found that medical nutrition therapy in pregnant women with gestational diabetes led to a decrease in blood glucose levels, but consuming fruits as a snack or at the main meal did not make a significant difference on fasting plasma glucose and postprandial blood glucose. It was concluded that the type and amount of carbohydrates consumed daily in gestational diabetes are determinative on blood glucose level.


RESUMO Objetivo O objetivo deste estudo é determinar o efeito do tempo de consumo de fruta na regulação da glucose no sangue em mulheres grávidas com diabetes gestacional. Métodos Este estudo foi realizado com 64 participantes voluntários diagnosticados com diabetes gestacional. Os participantes que foram encaminhados para o Departamento de Nutrição e Dietética foram divididos em dois grupos, de acordo com a ordem da sua aplicação. O grupo 1 foi incluído no programa de tratamento médico nutricional durante uma semana, consumindo fruta para a refeição principal e o grupo 2 para os lanches. Neste processo, foi aplicado aos participantes um plano de nutrição personalizado, com isocalórico, 3 refeições principais e 4 lanches, os macronutrientes de todas as refeições foram ajustados igualmente. Neste processo, os valores de glicemia foram medidos seis vezes por dia pelos participantes, e foram comparados os resultados da glicemia de ambos os grupos antes de se iniciar a terapia nutricional médica e no sétimo dia após o início da terapia nutricional médica. Resultados A idade média das mulheres que participaram no estudo foi de 33,50±4,95 e 32,28±5,18 anos para o 1º e 2º grupos, respetivamente, e não houve diferença entre os grupos em termos de medidas antropométricas. A glicemia média pós-prandial de manhã após terapia nutricional médica dentro dos grupos variou entre 180mg/d a 115mg/dL (p<0,001) para o Grupo 1, e de 185mg/dL a 110mg/dL para o Grupo 2 (p<0,001). Houve uma diminuição nos níveis de glicemia em jejum e glicemia média pós-prandial medidos de manhã, meio-dia e noite antes e depois da terapia nutricional médica dos grupos, mas não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os grupos (p>0,05). Os níveis de açúcar no sangue de todos os participantes na dieta diabetes gestacional baixaram para níveis normais sem necessidade de terapia com insulina. Uma diminuição estatisticamente significativa foi observada no sétimo dia do estudo nos níveis de diferença do glicemia média pós-prandial-glicemia em jejum das mulheres grávidas do grupo que consumiram fruta como aperitivo (Grupo 2). (p<0.001). Não houve diferença significativa nos valores de glicemia em jejum matinal de ambos os grupos antes e depois da dieta (p>0,05). Conclusão Como resultado deste estudo, verificou-se que a terapia nutricional levou a uma diminuição do açúcar no sangue em mulheres grávidas com diabetes gestacional, mas o consumo de fruta como lanche ou refeição principal não fez uma diferença significativa no jejum e na glucose do sangue pós-prandial. Concluiu-se que o tipo e a quantidade de hidratos de carbono consumidos diariamente na diabetes gestacional são determinantes para o nível de glicose no sangue.

ABSTRACT

The objective was to study the effectiveness of the growth regulator (ANA + GA3) associated or not to the application of adjuvant and artificial pollination in 'Gefner' atemoya. The experiment was conducted in the experimental orchard at Florida's Tropical Research and Education Center. The experimental design was in a randomized block, with 14 treatments, 10 repetitions and 3 flowers per plot. The highest percentages of fixed fruits were obtained with hand pollination ­ HP and 450 NAA + 1250 GA3 mg L-1 + adjuvant and HP. The use of hand pollination for 'Gefner' atemoya tree proved to be the most efficient method so far. Applying growth regulator without artificial pollination produces parthenocarpic fruits, however with high rate of abortions, and small fruits. Growth regulators together with hand pollination produces small and uneven fruits, and cause reduction in the fruits' titratable acidity. The use of adjuvant caused low fixation and toxicity to fruits, and its use is not recommended.

Introdução: A utilização das plantas medicinais como fonte de pr odutos terapêuticos acompanha a história da humanidade. A Platoniainsignis é uma espécie frutífera nativa da Amazônia oriental, popularmente conhecida como bacuri. O óleo extraído das sementes do bacuri proporciona uma composição química com alto teor de substâncias ativas com efeitos cicatrizantes, antioxidantes e anti-inflamatórios. Objetivo: Este estudo visa caracterizar os efeitos bioquímicos do óleo de bacuri como possível alternativa terapêutica preventiva. Método: Foram utilizados 15 camundongos Swiss adultos divididos em 3 grupos. O óleo de bacuri nas doses de 10 e 100 mg/Kg e o veículo (óleo de oliva ­ 10 ml/Kg) foram administrados via oral por 30 dias consecutivos. Após 24 horas da administração do composto natural e do veículo, procedeu-se a eutanásia dos animais; sangue coletado por punção cardíaca e o plasma utilizado para realizar as análises bioquímicas. Foram avaliados os parâmetros bioquímicos: glicose, colesterol total, colesterol LDL (LowDensityLipoprotein) e HDL (High Density Lipoprotein), triglicerídeos, transaminase glutâmica oxalacética (TGO), transaminase glutâmica pirúvica (TGP), gama glutamil transferase (GGT), ureia, creatinina e proteínas totais. Resultados: O pré-tratamento com o óleo de bacuri promoveu efeitos benéficos nos parâmetros bioquímicos analisados. Conclusões: Desta forma, o fruto pode ser utilizado como uma alternativa terapêutica na prevenção de doenças.


Introduction: The utilization of medicinal plants as a source of therapeutic products has been a part of human history. Platonia insignis is a fruit species native to the eastern Amazon, popularly known as bacuri. The oil extracted from bacuri seeds provides a chemical composition with a high content of active substances with healing, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects. Objective: This study aims to characterize the biochemical effects of bacuri oil as a possible preventive therapeutic alternative. Method: 15 adult Swiss mice were used, divided into three groups. Bacuri oil at doses of 10 and 100 mg/kg and the vehicle (olive oil ­ 10 ml/kg) were administered orally for 30 consecutive days. After 24 hours of administration of the natural compound and vehicle, the animals were euthanized; blood collected by cardiac puncture and plasma used to perform biochemical analyses. The biochemical parameters were evaluated: glucose, total cholesterol, LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) and HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) cholesterol, triglycerides, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT), urea , creatinine, and total proteins. Results: Pretreatment with bacuri oil promoted beneficial effects on the biochemical parameters analyzed. Conclusions: In this way, the fruit can be used as a therapeutic alternative in the prevention of diseases.

ABSTRACT

To explore the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to biosynthesis of active ingredients in wolfberry fruits of different varieties of Lycium barbarum L. and reveal the molecular mechanism of the differences of active ingredients, we utilized Illumina NovaSeq 6000 high-throughput sequencing technology to conduct transcriptome sequencing on the fruits of 'Ningqi No.1' and 'Ningqi No.7' during the green fruit stage, color turning stage and maturity stage. Subsequently, we compared the profiles of related gene expression in the fruits of the two varieties at different development stages. The results showed that a total of 811 818 178 clean reads were obtained, resulting in 121.76 Gb of valid data. There were 2 827, 2 552 and 2 311 DEGs obtained during the green fruit stage, color turning stage and maturity stage of 'Ningqi No. 1' and 'Ningqi No. 7', respectively, among which 2 153, 2 050 and 1 825 genes were annotated in six databases, including gene ontology (GO), Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) and clusters of orthologous groups of proteins (KOG). In GO database, 1 307, 865 and 624 DEGs of green fruit stage, color turning stage and maturity stage were found to be enriched in biological processes, cell components and molecular functions, respectively. In the KEGG database, the DEGs at three developmental stages were mainly concentrated in metabolic pathways, biosynthesis of secondary metabolites and plant-pathogen interaction. In KOG database, 1 775, 1 751 and 1 541 DEGs were annotated at three developmental stages, respectively. Searching the annotated genes against the PubMed database revealed 18, 26 and 24 DEGs related to the synthesis of active ingredients were mined at the green fruit stage, color turning stage and maturity stage, respectively. These genes are involved in carotenoid, flavonoid, terpenoid, alkaloid, vitamin metabolic pathways, etc. Seven DEGs were verified by RT-qPCR, which showed consistent results with transcriptome sequencing. This study provides preliminary evidences for the differences in the content of active ingredients in different Lycium barbarum L. varieties from the transcriptional level. These evidences may facilitate further exploring the key genes for active ingredients biosynthesis in Lycium barbarum L. and analyzing their expression regulation mechanism.

Abstract The South American fruit fly, Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann, 1830) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is an important pest in the subtropical region of Brazil. This insect has tritrophic relation between wild fruits and parasitoids and is associated with apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) orchards adjacent to the Atlantic Forest in Paraná. We thus investigated the degree of infestation of the fruit fly and natural parasitism in wild and cultivated fruits surrounding apple orchards. For this purpose, we collected fruits of Acca sellowiana (Berg.) Burret, Campomanesia xanthocarpa (Mart), Eugenia uniflora L., Eugenia pyriformis Cambessèdes, Psidium cattleianum Sabine, Psidium guajava (L.), Annona neosericea Rainer and Eriobotrya japonica (Thumb) in apple orchards adjacent to the Atlantic Forest located in Campo do Tenente, Lapa and Porto Amazonas counties. In total, we collected 18,289 fruits during four growing years. The occurrence of A. fraterculus depends on the susceptible period of apple fruits. A. sellowiana and P. cattleianum were considered primary fruit fly multipliers and P. guajava was secondary, all occurring after the apple harvest (IS period). The group of parasitoids with A. fraterculus was Aganaspis pelleranoi (Brèthes, 1924) (Hymenoptera: Figitidae), Opius bellus (Gahan, 1930), Doryctobracon areolatus (Szépligeti, 1911) and Doryctobracon brasiliensis (Szépligeti, 1911) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) all of which are first records in the Atlantic Forest in Paraná. First record of O. bellus occurring in the State of Paraná, as well as, first record of the tritrophic association between host plant A. neosericea, parasitoids D. areolatus and O. bellus and fruit fly A. fraterculus. The host P. cattleianum stood out among the Myrtaceae species in regard to the high diversity of parasitoid species (81% of parasitoids). The total number of Figitidae species (76.5%) was higher than that of Braconidae species. The influence of climatic events in southern Brazil on wild fruit production should be further studied to understand the association of A. fraterculus with the tritrophic relationship.


Resumo Mosca-das-frutas sul-americana, Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann, 1830) (Diptera: Tephritidae), é uma importante praga da região subtropical do Brasil. Este inseto tem relação tritrófico entre frutos silvestres e parasitoides e está associado a pomares de macieiras (Malus domestica Borkh.) adjacentes à Mata Atlântica no Paraná. Assim, investigamos o grau de infestação da mosca-das-frutas e o parasitismo natural em frutas silvestres e cultivadas ao redor de pomares de maçã. Para tanto, foram coletados frutos de Acca sellowiana (Berg.) Burret, Campomanesia xanthocarpa (Mart), Eugenia uniflora L., Eugenia pyriformis Cambessèdes, Psidium cattleianum Sabine, Psidium guajava (L.), Annona neosericea Rainer e Eriobotrya japonica (Thumb) em pomares de maçã adjacentes à Mata Atlântica localizados nos municípios de Campo do Tenente, Lapa e Porto Amazonas. No total, coletamos 18.289 frutos durante quatro anos de cultivo. A ocorrência de A. fraterculus depende do período de suscetibilidade dos frutos da maçã. A. sellowiana e P. cattleianum foram considerados multiplicadores primários de mosca-das-frutas e P. guajava foi secundário, todos ocorrendo após a colheita da maçã (período IS). Os parasitóides a associados a A. fraterculus foram Aganaspis pelleranoi (Brèthes, 1924) (Hymenoptera: Figitidae), Opius bellus (Gahan, 1930), Doryctobracon areolatus (Szépligeti, 1911) e Doryctobracon brasiliensis (Szépligeti, 1911) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), todos os quais são primeiros registros na Mata Atlântica no Paraná. Primeiro registro de O. bellus ocorrendo no Estado do Paraná, assim como, primeiro registro da associação tritrófica entre o hospedeiro A. neosericea, parasitoides D. areolatus e O. bellus e mosca-das-frutas A. fraterculus. O hospedeiro P. cattleianum se destacou entre as espécies de Myrtaceae pela alta diversidade de parasitóides associados (81% dos parasitóides). O número total de espécies de Figitidae (76,5%) foi superior ao de espécies de Braconidae. ABSTRACT

Objective@#To explore the relationship between fruit intake and the risk of overweight with obesity in children, so as to provide references for the prevention of childhood obesity.@*Methods@#From September to November 2014, a stratified cluster sampling method was used to select 6 369 children aged 6-12 from two elementary schools of a country in rural Chongqing for physical examinations and questionnaire surveys, and 1 814 children in grades 1-2 at baseline were followed up from March to May 2019. The relationship between fruit intake and the prevalence of overweight and obesity was analyzed.@*Results@#According to the percentile of fruit intake, the 6 369 children at baseline were assigned to three groups: Q 1 (< P 33.3 , fruit intake <100 g/d), Q 2 ( P 33.3 - P 66.7 , fruit intake:100-214.3 g/d), and Q 3 (> P 66.7 , fruit intake >214.3 g/d). For the baseline survey results, children in the Q 2 group had a lower weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) ( P <0.05); the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children in the Q 1 group was the highest (32.03%), and the prevalence of overweight and obesity among boys in the Q 2 group was the lowest (31.94%) after gender stratification ( P <0.05). The follow up survey results showed no significant differences between the three groups in terms of changes in height, weight, and BMI ( P >0.05); but the prevalence of obesity among youth in the Q 2 group was the lowest (5.07%, P <0.05). Compared with youth in the Q 2 group, the risk of obesity was higher among those in the Q 1 group at baseline survey ( OR=1.41, 95%CI=1.10-1.81, P <0.05), and was higher among those in the Q 3 group at follow up survey ( RR= 1.83, 95%CI=1.21-2.75, P <0.05).@*Conclusion@#Deviating from moderate fruit intake may increase the likelihood of overweight and obesity in children, and it is recommended that children are encouraged to consume fruits as part of a well balanced diet to prevent the occurrence of obesity.

'Kinnow' mandarin (Citrus nobilis L.× Citrus deliciosa T.) is an important marketable fruit of the world. It is mainstay of citrus industry in Pakistan, having great export potential. But out of total production of the country only 10% of the produce meets the international quality standard for export. Pre-harvest fruit drop and poor fruit quality could be associated with various issues including the plant nutrition. Most of the farmers do not pay attention to the supply of micro nutrients which are already deficient in the soil. Furthermore, their mobility within plants is also a question. Zinc (Zn) is amongst those micronutrients which affect the quality and postharvest life of the fruit and its deficiency in Pakistani soils is already reported by many researchers. Therefore, this study was carried out to evaluate the influence of pre-harvest applications of zinc sulfate (ZnSO4; 0, 0.4%, 0.6% or 0.8%) on pre-harvest fruit drop, yield and fruit quality of ‘Kinnow’ mandarin at harvest. The treatments were applied during the month of October i.e. 4 months prior to harvest. The applied Zn sprays had significant effect on yield and quality of the "Kinnow" fruit. Amongst different foliar applications of ZnSO4applied four months before harvest, 0.6% ZnSO4 significantly reduced pre-harvest fruit drop (10.08%) as compared to untreated control trees (46.45%). Similarly, the maximum number of fruits harvested per tree (627), fruit weight (192.9 g), juice percentage (42.2%), total soluble solids (9.5 °Brix), ascorbic acid content (35.5 mg 100 g-¹) and sugar contents (17.4) were also found significantly higher with 0.6% ZnSO4 treatment as compared to rest of treatments and control. The South American fruit fly, Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann, 1830) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is an important pest in the subtropical region of Brazil. This insect has tritrophic relation between wild fruits and parasitoids and is associated with apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) orchards adjacent to the Atlantic Forest in Paraná. We thus investigated the degree of infestation of the fruit fly and natural parasitism in wild and cultivated fruits surrounding apple orchards. For this purpose, we collected fruits of Acca sellowiana (Berg.) Burret, Campomanesia xanthocarpa (Mart), Eugenia uniflora L., Eugenia pyriformis Cambessèdes, Psidium cattleianum Sabine, Psidium guajava (L.), Annona neosericea Rainer and Eriobotrya japonica (Thumb) in apple orchards adjacent to the Atlantic Forest located in Campo do Tenente, Lapa and Porto Amazonas counties. In total, we collected 18,289 fruits during four growing years. The occurrence of A. fraterculus depends on the susceptible period of apple fruits. A. sellowiana and P. cattleianum were considered primary fruit fly multipliers and P. guajava was secondary, all occurring after the apple harvest (IS period). The group of parasitoids with A. fraterculus was Aganaspis pelleranoi (Brèthes, 1924) (Hymenoptera: Figitidae), Opius bellus (Gahan, 1930), Doryctobracon areolatus (Szépligeti, 1911) and Doryctobracon brasiliensis (Szépligeti, 1911) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) all of which are first records in the Atlantic Forest in Paraná. Assim, investigamos o grau de infestação da mosca-das-frutas e o parasitismo natural em frutas silvestres e cultivadas ao redor de pomares de maçã. Para tanto, foram coletados frutos de Acca sellowiana (Berg.) ABSTRACT

As an important model animal, fruit fly is characterized by outstanding genetic characteristics, relatively perfect nervous system, rapid reproduction, and low cost. Thus, it has been applied in the research on neuropsychiatric disorders in recent years, showing great potential in life science. The incidence of neuropsychiatric disorders has been on the rise, and the disorders have high disability rate and low case fatality rate. The global drug demand for such diseases is second only to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. At the moment, the demand of the drugs for the diseases have been rising, and it is an urgent task to develop related drugs. However, the research and development of the drugs are time-intensive and have a high failure rate. A suitable animal model can help shorten the time for drug screening and development, thereby reducing the cost and failure rate. This study reviews the application of fruit flies in several common neuropsychiatric disorders, which is expected to provide new ideas for the research and application of the model animals in traditional Chinese medicine.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Cherry extract has a high amount of anthocyanins and flavonoids containing antioxidant effects. Its high antioxidant characteristics have been shown to reduce markers of delayed muscle soreness (DOMS) and exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) to improve recovery after exercise. Objective: Verify the effects of the cherry extract on post-exercise muscle damage. Methods: Google scholar, Medline, and Scopus were systematically searched until February 2022. The Cochrane Collaboration tool was applied to determine the risks of bias. Results: The results showed that cherry extract administration did not have a decreasing impact on creatine kinase levels overall: (WMD = 12.85 IU. L-1, 95% CI: −35.94, 61.64; P = 0.606). Considerable heterogeneity was observed among the articles (Cochran's Q-test = 990.80, P = 0.000, I2 = 96.7 %). However, there is a significant reducing effect on pain sensation by the consumption of cherry extract (WMD = −6.105 mm; 95% CI: −11.193 −1.017; p = 0.019). Conclusion: Cherry extract consumption effectively reduced late-onset muscle pain among participants in the overall and subgroup analysis. Thus, the cherry extract may be a complementary alternative in recovery after exercise. Level of evidence II; Therapeutic studies - Manuscript review.

Suas altas características antioxidantes demonstraram reduzir os marcadores de dor muscular retardada (DOMS) e dano muscular induzido pelo exercício (EIMD) para melhorar a recuperação após o exercício. Objetivo: Verificar os efeitos do extrato de cereja nos danos musculares pós-exercício. Métodos: Google scholar, Medline e Scopus foram sistematicamente pesquisados até fevereiro de 2022. A ferramenta de colaboração da Cochrane foi aplicada para determinar os riscos de viés. Resultados: Os resultados mostraram que a administração do extrato de cereja não teve um impacto decrescente nos níveis de creatina quinase em geral: (WMD = 12,85 IU. L-1, 95% CI: −35,94, 61,64; P = 0,606). Uma heterogeneidade considerável foi observada entre os artigos (teste Q da Cochran = 990,80, P = 0,000, I2 = 96,7 %). Se ha demostrado que sus altas características antioxidantes reducen los marcadores de dolor muscular retardado (DOMS) y el daño muscular inducido por el ejercicio (EIMD) para mejorar la recuperación después del ejercicio. Objetivo: Verificar los efectos del extracto de cereza en el daño muscular posterior al ejercicio. Métodos: Se realizaron búsquedas sistemáticas en Google scholar, Medline y Scopus hasta febrero de 2022. Se aplicó la herramienta de colaboración Cochrane para determinar los riesgos de sesgo. Resultados: Los resultados mostraron que la administración de extracto de cereza no tuvo un impacto decreciente en los niveles de creatina quinasa en general: (WMD = 12,85 UI. L-1, IC del 95%: −35,94, 61,64; P = 0,606). Se observó una considerable heterogeneidad entre los artículos (prueba Q de Cochran = 990,80, P = 0,000, I2 = 96,7 %). Sin embargo, el consumo de extracto de cereza tiene un efecto significativo de reducción del dolor (WMD = −6,105 mm; IC del 95%: −11,193 −1,017; p = 0,019). Conclusión: El consumo de extracto de cereza fue eficaz para reducir el dolor muscular de aparición tardía entre los participantes en el análisis global y de subgrupos. Obesity and overweight result in metabolic changes that build up as risk factors for the development of the main non-communicable diseases. Among these alterations, dyslipidemia is an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CDV) and is expressed in elevated plasma levels of triacylglycerols, cholesterol, and low-density-lipoprotein (LDL, VLDL) and decreased plasma levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Passiflora tenuifila Killip is a native passion fruit species of the Brazilian Midwest region and is a good source of proanthocyanidins and dietary fibers. Proanthocyanidins are a class of phenolic compounds that are attributed with improving lipoprotein profile properties, translated as improved LDL/HDL ratio. Fibers are fermented by the gut microbiota and produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), also involved in the regulation of energetic metabolism.. A 30-consecutive-day-long intervention with lyophilized P. tenuifila flour was performed in eutrophic and obese subjects. Passion fruit ingestion increased fecal production of acetate, key SCFA in the modulation of lipid metabolism; reduced body fat percentage in all subjects; and reduced total cholesterol (TC) of subjects who presented basal CT > 130 mg/dL. After the intervention, plasma lipidomic analysis detected 44 statistically significant lipids, regardless of BMI. Considering the study population with altered TC, reduced levels of glycerophospholipids were observed, a lipid class studied for their involvement in CVD. The intake of P. tenuifila contributed to the improvement in cardiovascular risk markers and acts on lipid metabolism. These effects may be due to synergic action between the bioactive compounds in the fruit. Still, other studies are necessary to identify mechanisms related to the action of bioactives of P. tenuifila, which can be better directed by this lipidomic approach


A obesidade e o sobrepeso são preocupações resultam em alterações metabólicas que se acumulam como fatores de risco para o desenvolvimento a longo prazo das principais doenças crônicas não transmissíveis. Dentre essas alterações, a dislipidemia um importante fator de risco para doenças cardiovasculares (DCV), expressa em níveis plasmáticos elevados de triacilgliceróis, colesterol e das lipoproteínas de baixa densidade (VLDL, LDL), e níveis diminuídos da lipoproteína de alta densidade (HDL). Passiflora tenuifila Killip é uma espécie de maracujá nativa da região Centro-Oeste brasileira, e é uma boa fonte de proantocianidinas e fibras alimentares. As proantocianidinas são compostos fenólicos com reportados efeitos na melhora do perfil de lipoproteínas, traduzida como a relação LDL/HDL. As fibras são fermentadas pela microbiota intestinal e produzem ácidos graxos de cadeia curta (AGCC), metabólitos também envolvidos na regulação do metabolismo energético.. Assim, a lipidômica não-target é aplicada como ferramenta exploratória neste estudo: uma intervenção de 30 dias consecutivos de ingestão de P. tenuifila na forma de farinha liofilizada em indivíduos eutróficos e obesos. O consumo do maracujá promoveu aumento da produção fecal de acetato, AGCC importante na modulação do metabolismo lipídico; a redução do percentual de gordura corporal em todos os indivíduos; e redução do colesterol total (CT) para os indivíduos com CT > 130 mg/dL. A análise lipidômica do plasma detectou 44 lipídios estatisticamente relevantes, independentemente do IMC, após a intervenção. Considerando a população do estudo com CT alterado, foi observada uma redução de glicerofosfolipídios, classe de lipídios estudada pelo seu envolvimento em DCV. Assim, a ingestão de P. tenuifila contribui para a melhora nos marcadores de risco cardiovascular e atua no metabolismo lipídico. Estes efeitos podem ser decorrentes de sinergia entre os diversos compostos bioativos do fruto. Ainda, outros estudos são necessários para identificar mecanismos relacionados a ação dos bioativos da P. tenuifila e estes podem ser mais bem direcionados pela lipidômica

Abstract The aim of this study was to compare the dissolution properties of ibuprofen solid oral dosage forms commercially available in Bosnia and Herzegovina and to estimate the influence of dissolution medium composition on the drug release. Eight products (A-H) were subjected to in vitro dissolution test using experimental conditions described in USP42-NF37. Dissolution properties of one selected product were examined in the presence of alcohol (22.2% v/v) and fruit juice (22.2% v/v). Products marked B-H complied with the pharmacopeial criteria. Dissolution profile of product B was similar with dissolution profiles of products D, E, F and G and similarity was also found between products A-D, C-G, D-G and E-F. Drug release from most of the examined preparations fitted best to the Weibull kinetic model. In the presence of alcohol in the medium, higher amount of ibuprofen was dissolved. Contrary, ibuprofen dissolved in the presence of fruit juice was significantly lower. Differences in the dissolution profiles of investigated preparations suggest that their interchangeability should be additionally considered and demonstrated with in vivo bioequivalence studies. Presence of different substances in the medium can affect dissolution properties of ibuprofen, emphasizing the importance of the patient's compliance.

Objetivou-se identificar diferenças alimentares e antropométricas entre adultos mais velhos brasileiros (≥ 50 anos) residentes em áreas urbano-rurais. Trata-se de um estudo transversal com dados da segunda onda (9.949 participantes) do Estudo Longitudinal da Saúde dos Idosos Brasileiros (ELSI-Brasil), de 2019-2021. Foram avaliados: consumo alimentar semanal de fruta/hortaliça, feijão e peixe; autopercepção do consumo de sal; ambiente alimentar (disponibilidade de fruta/hortaliça na vizinhança e produção própria de alimentos); e parâmetros antropométricos objetivos (índice de massa corporal [IMC] e circunferência da cintura [CC]). As análises foram ajustadas por escolaridade. Em comparação com as áreas urbanas, observaram-se nas rurais: menor consumo de fruta/hortaliça em cinco dias da semana ou mais (74,6% vs. 86,4%) e maior consumo adequado de sal (96,8% vs. 92,1%) - diferenças observadas para homens e mulheres. A CC elevada foi menor nas áreas rurais (61,9% vs. 68%), sendo significativa somente para homens. Houve menor disponibilidade de fruta/hortaliça na vizinhança (41,2% vs. 88,3%) e maior produção própria de alimentos (38,2% vs. 13,2%) nas áreas rurais. O consumo de fruta/hortaliça em cinco dias da semana ou mais foi menor nas áreas rurais quando houve disponibilidade de fruta/hortaliça na vizinhança e ausência de produção própria de alimentos. Há diversidade alimentar e nutricional entre áreas urbano-rurais. O incentivo ao consumo de fruta/hortaliça nas áreas urbanas deve considerar a disponibilidade de fruta/hortaliça na vizinhança, enquanto nas áreas rurais deve ser em conjunto com a produção do próprio alimento. O consumo adequado de sal e a manutenção da CC nos valores ideais devem ser reforçados nas áreas urbanas.

Los análisis se ajustaron por escolaridad. Se observó un menor consumo de frutas/verduras en las zonas rurales respecto a las urbanas en ≥ 5 días/semana (74,6% vs. 86,4%), mayor consumo adecuado de sal (96,8% vs. 92,1%), y estas diferencias se observaron para hombres y mujeres. La CC elevada fue menor en las zonas rurales (61,9% vs. 68%), y fue significativa solo para los hombres. Hubo una menor disponibilidad de frutas/verduras en el barrio (41,2% vs. 88,3%) y mayor producción propia de alimentos (38,2% vs. 13,2%) en las zonas rurales. El consumo de frutas/verduras en ≥ 5 días/semana fue menor en las zonas rurales cuando hubo frutas/verduras disponibles en el barrio y ausencia de producción del propio alimento. Existe una diversidad alimentaria y nutricional entre las zonas urbanas y rurales. Fomentar el consumo de frutas/verduras en las zonas urbanas debe tener en cuenta la disponibilidad de frutas/verduras en el barrio, mientras que en las zonas rurales debe tener en cuenta también la producción del propio alimento. Se debe reforzar el consumo adecuado de sal y el mantenimiento de la CC en valores ideales en las zonas urbanas.

Weekly dietary intake of fruit/vegetables, beans, and fish; self-perception of salt consumption; food environment (availability of fruit/vegetables in the neighborhood and self-production of food); and objective anthropometric parameters (body mass index [BMI] and waist circumference [WC]) were evaluated. Analyses were adjusted for schooling level. Compared to urban areas, rural areas show lower consumption of fruit/vegetables five days or more per week (74.6% vs. 86.4%) and greater adequate salt intake (96.8% vs. 92.1%) - differences we observed for men and women. Rural areas showed lower high WC (61.9% vs. 68%), significant only for men. Considering food environment, rural areas had lower fruit and vegetable availability in the neighborhood (41.2% vs. 88.3%) and higher self-production of food (38.2% vs. 13.2%). We observed a lower consumption of fruit/vegetables five days or more per week in rural areas with fruit/vegetable availability in the neighborhood and no self-production of food. Urban and rural areas show food and nutritional diversity. Incentives for fruit or vegetable consumption among residents in urban areas should consider the greater availability of these foods in their neighborhood, whereas, in rural areas, self-production of food should be encouraged. Adequate salt intake and ideal WC maintenance should be reinforced in urban areas.

ABSTRACT

Colletotrichum, a genus of Ascomycota fungi with a diversity of species grouped into several species complexes, or clades, is associated with diseases known as "Anthracnose". It affects significantly different tropical and subtropical fruit species. Infections occur in the field and postharvest; quiescent stages are mainly responsible for postharvest losses. An analysis of this pre-infective stage is made based on consulted papers. The infective process is modulated by the length of the quiescent period of the fungus during the vegetative or pre-productive stages of trees. Quiescent stage is determined by the host's biochemical responses and the pathogen's activity. Once the pathogen is activated, it develops an infectious necrotrophic process. Colletotrichum quiescence has been studied mainly in subtropical fruits and horticultural species, and the studies highlight the role of volatile compounds, metabolites and enzymes involved in the length and breaking of quiescence, as well as the differential responses according to the phenological stage and the genotype of the plant. Transcriptomic and proteomic analysis of the host-fungus interaction have revealed the role of genes in the occurrence and breaking of quiescence. Knowledge about the quiescence of Colletotrichum in tropical fruits is necessary to improve management efficiency. Detection and induction of quiescent infections has been studied and genomics has allowed to understand the occurrence of quiescence in the infective process; however, in crops in the tropics, such as mango, an important crop in Colombia, questions about associated species and biology of their quiescence are still unanswered.


Colletotrichum es un hongo ascomicete, con diversidad de especies agrupadas en complejos o clados y se asocia a enfermedades conocidas, como "Antracnosis" y afecta significativamente especies de frutas tropicales y subtropicales. Las infecciones ocurren en el campo y postcosecha; los estados quiescentes son los principales responsables de pérdidas en postcosecha. Se realizó un análisis de esta etapa pre-infectiva, a partir de publicaciones consultadas. La infección está modulada por la duración del período de quiescencia del hongo durante las etapas vegetativa o pre-productivas de los árboles y está determinado por las respuestas bioquímicas del hospedante y la actividad del patógeno. Una vez se activa el patógeno, se desarrolla un proceso infeccioso necrotrófico. La quiescencia de Colletotrichum se ha estudiado, principalmente, en frutas subtropicales y especies hortícolas y destacan el papel de compuestos volátiles, metabolitos y enzimas en la duración y en la pérdida de la quiescencia, así como las respuestas diferenciales, según la fenología y el genotipo. Análisis transcriptómicos y proteómicos de la interacción hospedante-hongo han revelado el papel de genes en la ocurrencia y pérdida de quiescencia. Conocer la quiescencia de Colletotrichum en frutas tropicales es necesario para hacer más eficiente el manejo de la enfermedad. Se ha estudiado la detección e inducción de infecciones quiescentes y estudios genómicos han permitido entender su ocurrencia durante la infección; sin embargo, en cultivos en el trópico, como el mango, un cultivo importante en Colombia, las preguntas sobre las especies asociadas y la biología de la quiescencia de estas, aún están sin respuesta.
